THE STAR-SPANGLED SALUTE CONCERT A PATRIOTIC SUCCESS - Nearly 10,000 concertgoers enjoyed the 18 th Annual Star-Spangled Salute concert , a free Independence Eve spectacular featuring the Houston Symphony in a selection of patriotic favorites, held at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion .   The evening was presented by The Woodlands Development Company .

FOURTH OF JULY PARADE WINNERS -   Residents and guests enjoyed the Fourth of July festivities in The Woodlands from the Independence Eve Star-Spangled Salute concert at The Pavilion; the South County Fourth of July Parade , the Red, Hot & Blue Festival to the Fireworks finale (top photograph by Ted Washington ) along with numerous other festive activities.  

The theme for the 4 th of July parade was "American Patriots" . Over 115 entries participated in the parade.   The Third Annual Band Competition was held during the parade.   The Greater Houston All-Star Band took first place; followed by The Woodlands High School Band in second place; and The Woodlands College Park High School Band in third.

NEW DANVILLE RAFFLE HOUSE TO BE OPEN FOR TOURING - A brand new custom home in The Woodlands, built by Design Tech Homes , is being raffled off to benefit New Danville , Texas' first master-planned community for adults with special needs. The home is now completed, and will be open to the public for touring on two consecutive weekends - Saturday, July 14 and Sunday, July 15, and Saturday, July 21 and Sunday, July 22, 2007. The home will be open on Saturdays from 10 am - 5 pm and on Sundays from 12 noon - 5 pm. The drawing for the winner of the new home will take place on Saturday, July 28, 2007, according to Odette D'Agostino and Bev Earl , co-chairs of the New Danville House Raffle . Raffle tickets may be purchased for $100 each at the Open Houses, or online at www.newdanville.org .  

The home is located at 10 Hillock Woods Drive in the custom, golf course neighborhood of Grogan's Point in The Woodlands. The one-story residence features 3,500 square feet of living space with four bedrooms, 3½ baths, a formal dining room with butler's pantry, formal study and spacious family room/kitchen/breakfast area. The secluded master suite has his and hers walk-in closets. Other highlights include an oversized utility room, extended rear covered porch and three-car garage.

NOMINATIONS BEING ACCEPTED FOR 2007 HOMETOWN HEROES - Nominations for 2007 Hometown Heroes are now being accepted.   The honor will be bestowed upon individuals and businesses or institutions that serve as outstanding role models for volunteerism and dedication to The Woodlands community, according to Susan Vreeland-Wendt , director of marketing for The Woodlands Development Company .

The 2007 Hometown Heroes will be inducted into the Hometown Heroes Hall of Fame at " A Hero's Journey: The Woodlands 2007 Celebration of Excellence" benefiting Interfaith of The Woodlands , to be held Saturday, October 13, 2007 at The Woodlands Waterway Marriott .  

A Selection Committee of former Hometown Heroes will choose the five honorees for 2007. Nomination forms are available in The Villager newspaper ; at T he Woodlands Homefinder Center , located at 2000 Woodlands Parkway; Interfaith of The Woodlands, located at 4242 Woodrush Drive; or online at www.thewoodlands.net . The deadline for the nomination is Friday, August 17, 2007. All nominees must be current residents of The Woodlands, or businesses/institutions based in The Woodlands. MARKET STREET TO WELCOME EDDIE BAUER THIS FALL, SEVEN OTHER NEW STORES TO FOLLOW - Market Street - The Woodlands will add eight new retailers to its tenant mix in the next several months, beginning with the November opening of the men's and women's outdoor clothing retailer, Eddie Bauer .

FREE HOME BUYING SEMINAR TARGETED TO FIRST-TIME OR SPANISH-SPEAKING BUYERS SET FOR THIS WEEK - A free home buying seminar, targeted to first-time homebuyers or Spanish-speaking buyers will be presented at The Woodlands Homefinder Center (pictured) , at 2000 Woodlands Parkway, on Wednesday, July 11, 2007 from 4 pm - 5:30 pm and Saturday, July 14, 2007 from 3:30 pm - 5 pm.   The seminar showcases an overview of The Woodlands community, new amenities in the Village of Creekside Park, the general homebuying and loan process, renting vs. owning, understanding the Buyer's Representation Agreement and more. A guided tour of the Center and free collateral information is also included.

  • There are 67 individuals and four businesses that have been selected as Hometown Heroes in the community since this annual tradition began in conjunction with The Woodlands 25 th Anniversary Celebration in 1999.
  • Interfaith's Food Pantry is the largest food bank in South Montgomery County and helps individuals and families in crisis. During 2006, approximately 3,000 families received food from the pantry.  Interfaith of The Woodlands, located at 4242 Woodrush Drive, is in need of food for the pantry's shelves. 
  • The University Center in The Woodlands had 3,940 students enrolled in its 232 course offerings, according to spring 2007 enrollment data.  

TAKE YOUR DAUGHTER TO THE COURSE WEEK - As part of national Take Your Daughter to the Course Week , Canongate at The Woodlands is dedicating an entire week, July 15-20, 2007 to daughters and their parents.   Canongate will host a special free golf clinic for girls from 9 am - 11 am on July 16 at Canongate's The Oaks and Panther Trail golf courses .   While primarily focusing on dads and daughters, any parent may play with their daughter after Monday's clinic through Friday, July 20, for a cart fee only ($15 each) at either course. AREA QUILT GUILDS TO TAKE PART IN TOWN CENTER THEATRE'S PRODUCTION OF QUILTERS - Town Center Theatre, The Woodlands' first professional theater company, is partnering with several area quilt guilds to celebrate the opening of its inaugural production, the musical Quilters , which plays at The Woodlands College Park High School Auditorium from July 6-22, 2007 with performances Friday and Saturdays at 8 pm and Sundays at 2:30 pm (special start time of 6 pm on Sunday, July 22). Tickets are available for $25 for regular patrons and $20 for students and seniors age 55 and over; discounts are also available for subscribers and groups of 10 or more.   For tickets, call 832-592-9697.

At every show, quilt guilds will have a display set up in the lobby area, where guild members will provide quilting demonstrations, raffle off selected quilts and answer questions about the craft.  


MARKET STREET WELCOMES STRATHSPEY FIDDLERS FROM SCOTLAND - Visitors to Market Street's Central Park will be fit as a fiddle as they enjoy traditional fiddle music from Strathspey Fiddlers on Thursday, July 12, 2007 at 7 pm.   The Strathspey Fiddlers are a traditional group of talented young instrumentalists, dancers and singers hailing from around Moray and West Aberdeenshire, Scotland.   For more information, visit www.marketstreet-
