THE WOODLANDS DEVELOPMENT COMPANY SUPPORTS OPERATION GRADUATION - Joel Deretchin (left), vice president of public affairs for The Woodlands Development Company (TWDC) and Debra Staley (right), director of public affairs for TWDC, recently presented a $10,000 contribution to The Woodlands Parents Operation Graduation .   Accepting the donation on behalf of the non-profit organization is C.J. Haynes (center left) co-vice chair of Operation Graduation and assistant secretary of the Conroe Independent School District Board of Trustees ; and Lori Mauric e (center right), co-vice chair of Operation Graduation.   Cindy Hayley , chair of the event, is not pictured.  

This year marks the 20 th anniversary of Operation Graduation, an overnight celebration for graduating seniors of The Woodlands High School and The Woodlands College Park High School.    Scheduled for Tuesday, May 29 and Wednesday, May 30, The Woodlands Parents Operation Graduation provides this event for over 1,300 graduating seniors - approximately 850 students from The Woodlands High School and 450 from The Woodlands College Park High School, according to Haynes.   Activities for the students include games, entertainment and prizes.


THE WOODLANDS CONVENTION & VISITORS BUREAU ADDS BLAIR AND WOLDA TO BOARD OF DIRECTORS - T he Woodlands Convention and Visitors Bureau has named its initial Board of Directors with Nelda Luce Blair (left) appointed chair and Nick Wolda (right) named president. The Woodlands Convention and Visitors Bureau is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting The Woodlands Town Center as a premier regional destination for shopping, dining, entertainment and a place to conduct business. The bureau facilitates inquiries from meeting planners who are looking for a venue to host a meeting, convention or conference in Town Center.

In addition to her position as chairperson of The Woodlands Convention & Visitors Bureau, Blair is a litigator, turned legal and political advisor as well as a life-long resident of Montgomery County. Wolda is also vice-president for Marketing and Public Affairs at Town Center Improvement District (TCID) in The Woodlands where he develops and implements The Woodlands Town Center's marketing strategies including special events.

AND SPEAKING OF TCID - Town Center Improvement District (TCID) has been awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) for its comprehensive annual financial report. BOW WOW MEOW LUAU SURPASSES GOAL - The Humane Society of Montgomery County's 5 th Annual Bow Wow Meow Luau held on May 5, 2007 at the home of John and Marchita Cook in Carlton Woods raised more than $65,000 for the non-profit organization.  

Conroe Mayor Tommy Metcalf and the Conroe City Council (pictured) were honored by the Humane Society for their efforts to bring about the construction of a new, state-of-the-art animal shelter in Conroe which is scheduled to open in August 2007.


LMC'S 2007/2008 CLASS IS NOW FORMING - Applications are now being accepted for the Leadership Montgomery County (LMC) 2007/2008 class. LMC is a joint venture of the Greater Conroe/Lake Conroe Area Chamber of Commerce and the South Montgomery County Woodlands Chamber of Commerce. The program provides a process to better prepare the next generation of leaders.   The goal of the program is to educate and inform candidates about major community issues while inspiring and motivating individuals to exercise their leadership skills to benefit the community.  

Applications are available on LMC's website at www.lmctx.org . Deadline for applications is 4 pm on Friday, June 15, 2007.  


COURTHOUSE ANNEX WILL OPEN AT NEW LOCATION ON MONDAY, JUNE 4 - The Ed Chance Courthouse Annex in The Woodlands will open on Monday, June 4, 2007 at 8:30 am at 1520 Lake Front Circle.   The offices of the Montgomery County Precinct 3 Constable, Justice of the Peace, Tax Collector and County Clerk will make their home in the 44,000-square-foot building.   County Commission Ed Chance (pictured) will continue to office at 1130 Pruitt Road in Spring.  

  • •  Colonel Norm Balchunas announced that out of 850 units across the nation, The Woodlands High School JROTC unit won the President's Academic Challenge.

    •  Five students from The Woodlands College Park High School competed at DECA's International Career Development Competition and Conference and earned a spot at Internationals.  

    •  The 59-member Class of 2007 marks The John Cooper School's 14 th graduating class.   11 seniors were recognized as "Cooper Pioneers", attending the school since kindergarten.

    •  Three members of The Woodlands Swim Team qualified for Senior Nationals.

CLIFFORD THE BIG RED DOG(TM) LIVE AT THE PAVILION - Scholastic's "Clifford The Big Red Dog(TM) Live" will make his way onto the stage at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion on Sunday, June 3, 2007 in his first national tour.   Two shows are scheduled for 2 pm and 5 pm.   The show will include memorable songs and the characters Emily Elizabeth, Cleo, T-Bone, Jetta, Charlie and of course, Clifford .   Free pre-show excitement includes interactive activities and games with Radio Disney , hands-on activities from The Pavilion Partners and more.   

Reserved seating tickets are $35 for Big Dog seats, and $15-$20 for covered reserved.   Big Dog seats include pit seating and a meet-and-greet session with members of the cast prior to the performance. FINAL JAZZ CONCERT SERIES THIS THURSDAY AT MARKET STREET - The final Jazz Concert Series is scheduled for Thursday, May 31, 2007 from 6:30 until 9:30 pm at Market Street's Central Park.   Ken Mondshine, considered one of Houston's finest Sax players, will perform in this free concert.   Bring a blanket or lawn chair.


SUMMER CONCERT SERIES KICKS OFF SUNDAY, JUNE 3 - Pack a picnic and plenty of water to beat the heat, and head to Northshore Park on Sunday evenings for the Community Associations 2006 Concert-in-the-Park Summer Series , June 3 through July 29, 2007. The free concerts take place every Sunday, from 7 until 9 pm. FREE PARENT/TEEN SYMPOSIUM ON SUNDAY, JUNE 3 - "How to Stay Safe in an Unsafe World" Symposium will be held on Sunday, June 3, 2007 from 2 - 5 pm at The Woodlands Resort & Conference Center .   Judge Kathleen Hamilton will be addressing the group as well as the S.T.A.R. Team from Austin. S.T.A.R. is an acronym for "Students Taking Action for Respect" and is affiliated with the Texas Association Against Sexual Assault (TAASA).

The event is being hosted by the Montgomery County Women's Center (MCWC) and is sponsored by Capital One , The Woodlands Resort & Conference Center and Daos Business Services .   The event is free, and refreshments will be served.   For more information, call Donna Wick , PhD, at 281-292-4155, extension 228.
